Last year Kendrick Lamar released his major label debut album good kid, m. Dot’s transition to Kendrick Lamar as he tries to break free from Compton. Except instead of Woody Allen encapsulating all the neurotic aspects of my personality into five minutes, Kendrick sets up the story of him and Sherane. Dot, get in the car nigga. In the story, Kendrick is playing the character of K. Dot, his own persona based around his real life experiences growing up in Compton. The majority of the record focuses on K. Dot and his journey toward transforming into Kendrick Lamar. Anyway…because a packet of cigarillos and a beat CD sounds appealing, K.

One day, the West Coast emcee was Dr. The previously unreleased Big Sean song featured a now-infamous verse in which Lamar essentially asserted that he was on top of the rap game, and we all believed him, waving as he turned on his blinker and began to pass by every other rapper at miles an hour. Oh how wrong we were. In terms of sheer skill, it may be an objective fact at this point that Kendrick is a lyrical mastermind, and he has never been more aware of his abilities. After accumulating unimaginable wealth and fame, Kendrick becomes depressed and lonely, feeling like he has abandoned Compton more than his music has helped it.
Once Kendrick overcomes the psychological consequences of his notoriety, he also learns that he must fight the temptations that money and popularity bring him. The spoken word segment brings Lamar to terms with both his internal and external demons, as he sets his sights on improving the world at large with his music. Influenced heavily by free-jazz and old school funk, the album feels like a performance by a live band of which Lamar just happens to be a member.

His father is in the background belligerently ranting about his mysteriously missing dominoes. They proceed to argue, before his mother ends the voicemail. This little interruption seems insignificant and even a little ridiculous upon first listen.

Music is, by its very nature, subjective. Personally, I am not the biggest hip-hop fan; however, I love Kendrick Lamar. My experience with Lamar began during welcome week last year. When I reviewed Good Kid, M. This is Lamar at his angriest, and unfortunately, it does not work. Dot has ever released. Now apparently I am in the minority here as the song reached number 22 on the Billboard US Rap Songs chart and was one of four songs to be released as a single off the album.
Lamar has often been known for his clever wordplay and incredible delivery with strong production value to boot. But the beat is fine compared to the words. Really, Kendrick? I fully understand the point of this song is not to be the pinnacle of human achievement. When a song is popular, they make a music video. For the first 90 seconds or so, Lamar sits around his house and eventually goes to the store.

Good kid m. The story told over the course of 12 songs – plus however many bonus tracks – is one of self-awakening, as much for the listener as for Lamar. The storyline is roughly as follows: Lamar “borrows” his mother’s caravan. He takes it to see his girlfriend Sherane – whose brothers ambush him? Lamar speeds off into the night to wreak havoc with “the homies. Drinks it off while his homies jump back in the van to shoot up Sherane’s brother. All of which takes place in a hour span – probably.
The story, what Lamar dubs “a short film,” is highly intricate and is oftentimes overshadowed by typewriter-punch flows and crisp beats. Let’s just say Lamar was lucky not to have had the caravan impounded. Lines such as this one really take the fun out of maxing your stereo: “Dream of living life like rappers do, bump that new E after school, you know big ballin with my homies, Earl Stevens had us thinking rational. But Lamar’s not done: “Back to reality, we poor, ya bitch,” he raps – begging some interesting questions.
Such as: Is it helpful or harmful to treat hip-hop as an escape? What about the countless Lamar’s who don’t flip their imagination into reality?

In the intro, Kendrick describes how parties progress from taking lots of shots, to being very drunk, and eventually to passing out.
